December 2, 2025Part 3: How to Recover Your Credit After Identity Theft
After identity theft, most people are left with the same question: “Now what?”
You may have fraudulent accounts, late payments you didn’t make, collections you don’t recognize, or your score may have dropped for reasons completely beyond your control.
The good news: you can recover — fully. And in many cases, victims in Fort Worth, Arlington, Mansfield, and Grand Prairie end up with stronger, cleaner credit than before the breach.
This is your step-by-step roadmap to rebuilding after identity theft.
1. Remove Every Fraudulent Account from All Three Credit Bureaus
If you completed the steps in Part 2, you already have:
- Your FTC Identity Theft Report
- Proof of fraudulent accounts
- Credit freeze in place
Now it’s time to get every fraudulent item off your report.
In Texas, creditors are legally required to delete fraudulent information when you’re a confirmed victim of ID theft.
Send dispute packets (with your FTC report included) to:
- Experian
- Equifax
- TransUnion
Be firm. This is your right under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and Texas Business & Commerce Code §20.06.
2. Request the Creditor’s Fraud Investigation Results
This one step separates amateurs from real pros.
Every creditor involved must perform a fraud investigation. You have the right to request:
- All documents used to verify the account
- Recorded calls (if any)
- Signed applications
- All communication tied to the account
If something does not match your identity, the account must be removed.
We help DFW residents with these requests every week — and the results are dramatic.
3. Follow Up Every 30 Days Until Every Fraud Item Is Gone
Bureaus have 30 days (45 if documentation is provided) to respond.
If they:
- Don’t respond
- Don’t investigate properly
- Fail to provide documentation
— the law requires them to delete the item.
Most people stop too early. Keep the pressure on. Document everything.
4. Rebuild Positive Credit (The Smart + Safe Method)
Once the fraudulent items are handled, it’s time to strengthen your legitimate credit foundation.
Recommended rebuilding tools:
- Self Lender / Self Financial – reports your payments monthly
- Credit builder cards – secured cards help rebuild safely
- Experian Boost – adds your utilities & streaming bills
- Authorized user (AU) trade line – only with someone responsible
Rule of thumb: Aim for 3–5 positive accounts reporting consistently.
5. Monitor Every 30–45 Days for Relapses
Identity theft often happens in clusters. After thieves fail the first time, they sometimes try again with:
- Medical bills
- Small-credit stores
- Online lenders
Stay vigilant. Check your reports monthly for at least six months.
6. Document Everything — It Strengthens Your Case
Keep a folder with:
- Your FTC Identity Theft Report
- All letters you mailed
- All bureau responses
- Police report (if applicable)
- Credit freeze confirmations
If any bureau or creditor violates the FCRA during your recovery, this documentation becomes powerful leverage for deletion.
7. If You’re in DFW, Get Local Help — Not a Call Center
Identity theft recovery is emotional. It affects your finances, housing, job opportunities, and peace of mind. Having a real human — not a corporate script — walk you through it makes a massive difference.
We help people across Fort Worth, Arlington, Mansfield, and Grand Prairie recover from identity theft every week. Our office is right here in Arlington, and we treat every case like family.
Your identity. Your reputation. Your future — we protect all three.
